New York City FC faced a tough challenge at Yankee Stadium, succumbing to a 3-2 defeat against Inter Miami, marking an eventful clash in Week 5 of the MLS season. Javier Mascherano’s side saw key performances from Gonzalo Luján, who opened the scoring early in the match (2’ 1H), and Lionel Messi, who added to the tally with a stunning free-kick (15’ 2H) shortly after Micael scored (28’ 2H).
NYCFC celebrated a brief lead with their goals coming from Nicolás Fernández Mercau (16’ 1H, free-kick) and Agustín Ojeda (13’ 2H). Fernández Mercau’s remarkable free-kick from outside the box found the top corner, igniting the home crowd.
Despite Inter Miami’s struggles, including two shots from Messi hitting the woodwork, they maintained their composure and secured the victory.
Gonzalo Luján emerged as the standout player, scoring one goal and making significant defensive contributions by winning three tackles and clearing the ball nine times from danger. Messi was also instrumental, netting one goal and completing 23 successful passes while taking nine shots.
The NYCFC head coach, Pascal Jansen, opted for a 4-5-1 formation with Matthew Freese in goal, supported by Tayvon Gray, Thiago Martins, Kai Trewin, and Kevin O’Toole in defense; Keaton Parks, Aiden O’Neill, Agustín Ojeda, Maximiliano Moralez, and Hannes Wolf in midfield; and Nicolás Fernández Mercau leading the attack.
Meanwhile, Inter Miami lined up in a 4-5-1 setup with Dayne St. Clair between the posts. The defense comprised Ian Fray, Gonzalo Luján, Micael, and Noah Allen, while David Ayala, Yannick Bright, Mateo Silvetti, Lionel Messi, and Telasco Segovia worked in midfield, and Tadeo Allende led the front line.
Referee Armando Villarreal officiated the encounter at Yankee Stadium.
