In a gripping clash held at the Romelio Martínez Stadium, Junior managed to secure a vital victory against América de Cali with a final score of 2-1 on the seventh matchday of the Colombian league.
The match started with Junior taking the lead early on at the sixth minute through a penalty kick. This initial advantage set the tone for the first half, but América de Cali responded well, leveling the score at 27 minutes when Yeison Guzmán scored with a brilliant shot from inside the semicircle, directed to the right post of the goal.
Despite threatening to take the lead, América’s Jan Lucumi came close at the 35th minute, but his effort struck one of the goalposts, keeping the score tied.
The second half saw a surge from Junior, culminating in a decisive moment at the 54th minute when Teófilo Gutiérrez netted a penalty kick, sealing the game at 2-1. Gutiérrez’s performance earned him the title of man of the match.
Luis Muriel also shone for Junior, contributing not only with a goal but also registering five shots on target throughout the match.
Both teams had distinctly different formations; Junior, managed by Alfredo Arias, opted for a 4-2-4 setup featuring goalkeeper Mauro Silveira and skilled forwards Yimmi Chará and Cristian Barrios.
