Vélez initially gained the lead in the 31st minute of the first half through Jano Gordón, but Independiente quickly leveled the match just a minute later when Gordón accidentally scored an own goal.
Independiente pressed to take the lead after the equalizer, with Santiago Montiel coming agonizingly close to scoring, hitting the post in the 55th minute of the second half.
