At Soldier Field, New York City FC showcased their proficiency by overcoming Chicago Fire with a 3-1 scoreline. Despite a strong start from Chicago Fire, which took the lead through Philip Zinckernagel’s goal in the 12th minute, NYCFC displayed remarkable resilience and turned the match around. The comeback was fueled by goals from Nicolás Fernández Mercau (39’) and Alonso Martínez (57’), along with Seymour Reid sealing the victory with a late goal in stoppage time (90+2’).
Philip Zinckernagel ignited the game early, bringing hope to fans by scoring with a well-placed shot into the right corner after receiving an assist from Brian Gutiérrez.
Alonso Martínez shone brightly, emerging as the standout performer. The NYCFC striker not only scored a goal but also had four attempts on target, confirming his crucial role in the match.
Nicolás Fernández Mercau also contributed significantly to the win with his performance, netting one goal and helping in midfield.
Chicago Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter deployed a 4-3-3 formation with Christopher Brady in goal; Jonathan Dean, Joel Waterman, Jack Elliott, and Andrew Gutman forming the defense; André Franco, Brian Gutiérrez, and Dje D’Avilla in midfield; and Zinckernagel, Hugo Cuypers, and Jonathan Bamba leading the attack.
On the flip side, NYCFC coach Mehdi Ballouchy strategically opted for a 5-3-2 setup, starting Matthew Freese in goal; a defensive line of Tayvon Gray, Raul Gustavo, Thiago Martins, Justin Haak, and Kevin O’Toole; with Nicolás Fernández Mercau, Aiden O’Neill, and Hannes Wolf in midfield; and Alonso Martínez and Maximiliano Moralez up front.
The match was officiated by Pierre Lauziere.
