In front of their home fans, Peñarol celebrated a hard-fought victory against Progreso in the opening match of the Clausura season. Progreso initially went ahead in the first half with a goal from Ayrton Cougo at the 30th minute. However, Peñarol showcased their resilience by pulling off a comeback with two second-half goals from Leonardo Fernández (31’) and Matías Arezo (44’).
David Terans came close to scoring on two occasions, hitting the post both times, leaving him frustrated. Matías Arezo was a standout player, not only scoring but also being active with two shots on goal.
Nicolás Gentilio, Progreso’s goalkeeper, was a key figure in the match as he made seven critical saves to keep his team competitive throughout.
Peñarol’s coach, Diego Aguirre, set his team up in a 4-5-1 formation, which featured Martín Campaña in goal, with Damián Suárez, Emanuel Gularte, Nahuel Herrera, and Maximiliano Olivera forming the defensive line. The midfield included Ignacio Sosa, Jesús Trindade, Javier Cabrera, Leonardo Fernández, and David Terans, with Maximiliano Silvera leading the attack.
On the other side, Alejandro Larrea also opted for a 4-5-1 formation for Progreso, with Nicolás Gentilio guarding the net and a defensive setup that included Gianfranco Trasante, Marcos Paolini, Nicolás Olivera, and Facundo Kidd. The midfielders were Agustín Pinheiro, Adrián Colombino, Nicolás Fernández, Ignacio Lemmo, and Ayrton Cougo, while Franco López spearheaded the attack.
Referee Andrés Matonte oversaw the match.
Looking ahead to the next round, Peñarol will face their eternal rivals Nacional at home, while Progreso will host Cerro Largo. This upcoming clash holds particular significance for Peñarol as it will be another edition of the Superclásico.
As a result of this win, Peñarol sits atop the league with three points, while Progreso remains in sixteenth place without any points.
