On Tuesday, Vélez secured a narrow 2-1 victory against Talleres in the second round of the Apertura tournament. The match started on the wrong foot for Vélez when Augusto Schott scored for Talleres with a powerful header in the 26th minute of the first half, putting the Matador in the lead.
However, Vélez displayed resilience and managed to turn the game around in the second half. Manuel Lanzini marked the equalizer in the 52nd minute from a set piece, showing remarkable skill to direct the ball into the net. Later, Roberto García clinched the victory for Vélez with a well-placed shot in the 79th minute, after a well-executed play.
Despite having more shooting opportunities, with a total of 18 attempts, Talleres struggled to find the back of the net consistently. Out of those, only 8 shots were on target, while the other 10 went astray.
Roberto García was undoubtedly the standout player, not only for his critical goal but also for his solid defensive performance. Manuel Lanzini also played a pivotal role, scoring once and attempting two shots on target.
The head coach of Vélez, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, deployed a 4-4-2 formation with Álvaro Montero in goal, and defenders Jano Gordón, Lisandro Magallán, Aarón Quirós, and Elías Gómez. The midfield was composed of Tobías Andrada, Claudio Baeza, Rodrigo Aliendro, and Manuel Lanzini, while the attacking duo featured Matías Arias and Braian Romero.
On the other side, Talleres, led by Carlos Tévez, lined up in a 4-3-3 formation with Guido Herrera as the goalkeeper. Defenders included Augusto Schott, Matías Catalán, José Luis Palomino, and Gabriel Báez, while the midfield trio comprised Juan Sforza, Matías Galarza, and Ulises Ortegoza. Up front, the attacking trio featured Giovanni Baroni, Rick Lima Morais, and Ronaldo Martínez.
The match was officiated by referee Yael Falcón Pérez.
Looking ahead, Vélez will face Independiente in their next outing, while Talleres will host Platense at their home ground, with the date yet to be confirmed.
